LCUSD’s optional Spanish instruction is offered to all interested LCUSD students in grades 3rd-6th. The objective for Sixth Grade Spanish is to provide instruction that will allow students to test out of Spanish 1 and take Spanish 2 in 7th grade. Students who pass the placement test and take Spanish 2 in 7th grade will be one to two years ahead of other students in learning a foreign language. Students must take the District sponsored five-week summer school class, offered at LCHS 7/8, to complete Spanish 1 which will prepare them for the placement test. The placement test is given at the end of the summer course. Students must take the summer course to be eligible for the placement exam; students who successfully pass the placement exam will be able to enroll in Spanish 2 as a 7th grader. The summer course is for graduating 6th graders only. To be eligible for the summer course, students must complete Sixth Grade Spanish with at least an 80% test grade average on chapter tests and benchmark assessments. Forms for summer school will go home in the spring of 2020 for students to register for the course.
Registration for LCUSD Spanish:
Registration for the LCUSD Spanish program will be online. The registration form must be completed for each child you wish to register for sixth grade Spanish.
Complete the entire form and submit it by clicking “submit” at the end of the form, by Thursday, August 26, 2021.
The sixth grade class is limited to 32 students per campus and therefore, in order to equitably and fairly fill the classes, we will conduct a lottery if more than 32 students apply to the program. Students who have participated in the program in previous grades will be given priority to those who are new to the program if numbers exceed capacity.
Classes will begin the week of September 13, 2021. Prior to the start of class, students can explore the cultural video links on their Spanish Google classroom and complete an assignment that will be posted on the Google Classroom.
Sixth grade students will be involved in learning Spanish through a variety of in-class activities and structured lessons provided by Sra. Hurley. Additional enrichment opportunities will also be available through the Spanish Google Classroom that has been set up for sixth grade Spanish. Students will receive a code to sign into the Spanish Google Classroom when they receive enrollment confirmation. The Spanish Google Classroom is where students will receive their at-home practice assignments. Sixth grade students will be given homework throughout the year and are expected to practice what they have learned in class for a minimum of 15 minutes at home daily. Families are encouraged to be involved in the learning process. Student achievement will be documented through progress reports which will be sent home at the end of each trimester. Students will not earn official grades.
Spanish classes are held on the following days throughout the year.
PCY: Every Tuesday (during PE and after school from 3:00-4:00 p.m.)
PCR: Every Wednesday (during PE and after school from 3:00-4:00 p.m.)
LCE: Every Thursday (during PE and after school from 3:00-4:00 p.m.)
Sixth graders will have Spanish instruction for 30 minutes during P.E. and one hour after school from 3:00-4:00 p.m. and meet (in-person) on the days noted above. Students must attend all classes, both during and after school, to meet the requirements for participation.
In addition to the days noted above, all 6th grade PCY, PCR, LCE Spanish students will have access to Office Hours/Extra Help on Mondays from 3:15-3:45 p.m. This class will take place via Zoom. The link to this Zoom will be available on Google Classroom and students can access this once a confirmation notice has been received.
Students who are enrolled in Spanish will receive a confirmation notice of enrollment. They will also get a yearlong calendar that shows the days they should attend Spanish (during their PE time and after school), and a code for their Spanish Google Classroom. Please expect enrollment confirmation forms to arrive home during the week of August 30, 2021.
