Spanish

The LCUSD Spanish program is an academic elective. This optional program is open to all third through sixth grade students in LCUSD. Spanish classes are 30 minutes long for 3rd - 5th graders and classes are during the regular P.E. time on a rotating schedule. In addition to the 30 minute P.E. class, sixth graders are required to attend an after school class for one hour, from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. The after school classes are on the same days that sixth graders have Spanish during P.E.

Third and Fourth Grade Curriculum: Classes focus on developing receptive and expressive language skills in Spanish. Instructional strategies include: “total physical response,” whole-class/partner activities, songs, games, and speaking/action activities. Sample curriculum topics include: alphabet, greetings & courtesies, counting numbers, naming colors, family members, weather, body parts, days, months, seasons, classroom, clothing, house & home, food/restaurant, sports/hobbies, and telling time.

Fifth and Sixth Grade Curriculum: Students work from the La Cañada High School Spanish 1 textbook Descubre. Instructional strategies include: “total physical response,” whole-class/partner activities, games, speaking/action activities, reading and writing activities. Sample curriculum topics include: review of third/fourth grade topics and in-depth grammar study (subject/verb agreement, adjective/noun agreement, etc.).

There is only one elementary Spanish teacher that teaches at all three elementary schools. Classes are on a rotating basis so that students still receive the appropriate amount of P.E. minutes at each school. Therefore, classes meet on different days. Monday and Fridays rotate between all three schools on a monthly basis (For example: each month, Mondays are assigned to one school and Fridays to another school). Tuesdays are always assigned to PCY, Wednesdays to PCR and Thursdays to LCE. A calendar will be sent to all students who are registered in the program the week of August 27th.

A registration form will be emailed to all parents of 3rd-6th grade LCUSD students. If you have any questions regarding the Spanish program, you may reach out to Sra. Hurley via email. Her email address is: katherinehurley@lcusd.net
